A sufficiently powerful quantum computer will eventually break current asymmetric cryptography like RSA, rendering standard digital connections insecure. While a quantum system of that scale does not exist yet, nation-state adversaries are already executing “harvest now, decrypt later” campaigns to steal encrypted network traffic today and decrypt it once quantum capabilities catch up. As Karl Holmqvist, CEO & Founder of Lastwall, highlights, “A sufficiently sized quantum computer will let us break current asymmetric cryptography. The risk right now is what they are calling store now, decrypt later campaigns, where adversaries are hacking internal infrastructure, stealing encrypted data now, and decrypting it later when they have that capability.”
